Water & Health Protection

Water is the lifeblood of our communities, and the fundamental bedrock of public health. At the Asanteman Anti-Pollution Coalition (AAPC), we recognize the undeniable link between a clean environment and a healthy population. Guided by Ghana's commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals for Good Health (SDG 3) and Clean Water (SDG 6), our Water & Health Protection initiative is dedicated to safeguarding the rivers, streams, and drainage systems across Konongo and the wider Asanteman region. We are committed to ensuring that our natural water resources remain pristine and that our neighborhoods are free from preventable, pollution-borne diseases.

The indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste and refuse into our drainage networks poses a severe threat to community well-being. Choked gutters quickly become stagnant breeding grounds for mosquitoes, triggering devastating outbreaks of malaria, while contaminated runoff risks spreading cholera and other dangerous waterborne illnesses. Furthermore, the toxic ash generated by the open burning of waste often finds its way into our water tables during heavy rains. To combat this, the AAPC works proactively to break the cycle of pollution and disease, treating environmental sanitation as a critical public health emergency.

Our approach combines rigorous public education with direct, hands-on community action. We lead targeted campaigns alongside the Assembly Task Force to de-silt gutters before the rainy seasons hit, drastically reducing the risk of catastrophic floods that destroy property and contaminate drinking water sources. Concurrently, we educate market women, transport unions, and households on the severe health implications of improper waste disposal. We also actively monitor our local rivers and streams, acting swiftly to report and halt any illegal dumping activities that threaten these vital ecosystems and the vulnerable communities that rely on them.

Protecting our water and health is a shared, daily responsibility that begins in our own homes, markets, and lorry parks. We urge every citizen of Asanteman to pledge never to sweep rubbish into gutters or dump refuse near water bodies.
